Protecting Forests from Pests and Diseases
Ongoing epidemic
Our Mission
SOPFIM’s mission aims to protect forest resources against insects and diseases in harmony with the environment. Its main mandate is the fight against the spruce budworm (SBW). SOPFIM carries out aerial spraying programs using biological insecticide Bacillus thuringiensis subspecies kurstaki (Btk) on Quebec forests.
A private, non-profit organization created in 1990, the Société de protection des forêts contre les insectes et maladies (SOPFIM) is the main player in the fight against forest insect pests in Quebec. The regions currently affected by the epidemic are Abitibi-Témiscamingue, Bas-Saint-Laurent, Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean, Capitale-Nationale, Gaspésie, Côte-Nord, Chaudière-Appalaches and Outaouais.
